-An English-language report for distribution in North America-
The North American office of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association,
Inc. (JAMA) released its newly published English-language report A
New American Dynamic on November 18, 2003 (U.S. local time). The report
looks at Japanese automakers'contribution to local employment in the
United States and the scale and nature of their investment there, with
a special focus on the "eco" and other advanced technologies they are
incorporating in their vehicles. The publication will be distributed
to the U.S. Congress, relevant government agencies, the mass media
and other interested parties.
Available on-line at www.jama.org,
the Web site of JAMA's North American office, the report highlights
the following facts and figures:
- *Nearly 400,000 Americans now design, build and sell Japanese-branded
vehicles in the U.S.
*In 2002 local production in the U.S. totalled 2.6 million vehicles.
*Japanese automakers currently supply 62% of their total U.S.
sales from North American plants.
*Cumulative investment in U.S. auto and auto parts manufacturing
operations now exceeds $22 billion.
*Record-high purchases of U.S.-made auto parts in 2002 were worth
a total of $37.34 billion.
- Focusing on the introduction of eco-friendly and advanced
safety technologies, Japanese automakers are building vehicles
that are more fuel-efficient, less polluting and safer for both
occupants and pedestrians. The report features individual automakers'breakthrough
achievements with respect to hybrid, fuel-cell and other eco-friendly
technologies and their integration of advanced safety and IT technologies
in the vehicles they produce.
- Some of the many equity relationships with the U.S. Big Three
and other global automakers are also examined.
