JAMA Publishes "Japan's Automobile Manufacturers: Growing Investment and Employment in America"

The North American office of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) released its newly published English-language report “Japan’s Automobile Manufacturers: Growing Investment and Employment in America.”

This report looks at Japanese automakers’ contributions to local employment, and the scale and nature of investment there. The publication is distributed to officials in the U.S. Congress, relevant government agencies, the mass media and other interested parties.

Available on-line at www.jama.org , the web site of JAMA’s North American office, the report highlights the following facts and figures:

1. Japanese Automakers’ Employment and Investment in the U.S.

  • Over 410,000 Americans now design, build, and sell Japanese-branded vehicles in the U.S.
  • In 2003, local production in the U.S. totaled approximately 2.9 million vehicles.
  • Japanese automakers currently supply 64% of their total U.S. sales from North American plants.
  • Japanese automakers currently export 13.4% of their locally produced vehicles.
  • Cumulative investment in the U.S. automobile and auto parts manufacturing industries is now approximately $26 billion.

2. Japanese Automakers’ Purchase of U.S.-Made Auto Parts (Fiscal 2003)

  • Record-high purchases of U.S.-made auto parts in fiscal 2003 were worth a total of $41.51 billion.
